After helping lead their squads to deep postseason runs this spring, six players from Santa Ynez High and Dunn Academy were honored as members of the All-CIF Southern Section baseball teams.

The All-CIF teams, which were selected by the CIF-SS Baseball Coaches Association, were announced on June 12.

Felipe Gonzales, who capped his Santa Ynez career with a team-high 47 hits and a .480 batting average this season, was the lone Pirate to land on the Division 5 first team. Fellow senior Zach DeMarcus, who was strong at the plate and on the mound for the Pirates, was named to the second team. For Dunn, sophomore Ryan Layton and senior Geoff Billock were each named to the Division 7 first-team, while senior Cody Boal and junior Jake Harris were each selected to the second team.

Layton was the top pitcher for the Earwigs, who won their second straight Condor League title and also advanced to the CIF semifinals for the second consecutive season. The lefthander led the squad with a 10-1 record, 65 strikeouts and a team-best 1.03 ERA. At the plate, he carried a .404 batting average with 20 RBI. Billock batted .422 and led Dunn with two home runs. He also drove in 18 runs.

DeMarcus hit .370 for Santa Ynez, which went 22-7 and reached the CIF Division 5 quarterfinals. He also drove in a team-high 34 runs, but was just as dangerous on the mound. As the team’s top reliever, he amassed a 1.93 ERA and finished with four wins and 21 strikeouts in 29 innings pitched.

Boal batted .425 with 19 RBI, while Harris hit .368 with 19 RBI.

Gonzales, who also tied for the team lead with four home runs, and DeMarcus were two of just six players out of 40 from the Los Padres League – three on the first-team and three on the second-team – to be named All-CIF.
