The endeavor benefits children of service members who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan, explained organizer Jim Banakus of American Legion Orcutt Chapter 534. “Thousands of heroes have left children behind, and many are 10, 12, 15 years of age,” he said. “We want to help them when they enter college.” The group has raised $18,000 in its efforts for the Legacy Scholarship Fund. American Legion National has raised $669,000 for scholarship funds. The leather-vested riders started from downtown Orcutt toward Lompoc American Legion Post 211, stopped at Mosby Winery on Santa Rosa Road, then on to Firestone Walker Brewery in Buellton and Ghost Riders Tavern in Los Alamos before returning to Orcutt. jfoster@syvjournal.com
