Andberg is top volunteer

Buellton resident Shirley Andberg, the Santa Ynez Valley Volunteer of the Year, says she is “just overwhelmed” by the honor and “doesn’t deserve it.”

The senior citizens she counsels and helps, and the Valley Foundation that sponsors the award, obviously don’t agree. Anberg has been volunteering with seniors at the Buellton Senior Center since the 1980s and said the work she does gives her a lot of satisfaction. “I may give a lot,” she said, “but I get back even more.”

She will be honored at a banquet on April 5 at the Marriott in Buellton, along with other volunteers being saluted, including John Rasmussen, Man of the Year; Barbara Anderson, Woman of the Year; volunteers Clara Ehrsam, Patricia Foxen and Annette “Sissy” Rogers; and Lifetime Achievement Award winners Ken and Lloyd Mills.

Christians host 5K run

Christians In Action club of Santa Ynez Valley Union High School sponsored a 5k run and walk-a-thon event at Old Mission Santa Inés on Sunday, part of the young people’s project to benefit oppressed people in developing countries.

“Road to Pakistan” was the theme, and the purpose was to generate cash donations in support of a church in Karachi, Pakistan.

CIA members assembled and sent a relief package to the same church in October 2007. The local group is hoping to encourage the Christian minority in Pakistan, which is under pressure just to survive, according to CIA’s statement.

More information is available by calling Jose Ramirez, CIA president, at 291-2595, or David Imani, vice president, at 245-9207. The club e-mail is ciasyclub@gmail.com.

“We’re really excited about having Randy on our board,” board chair Lin Graf said. “He will bring a wealth of knowledge to the agency as we share with the community the great success of Zona Seca and its highly-visible youth violence and gang intervention program, Youth CineMedia.”

“We are delighted to add Mr. Fox to our team,” said executive director Frank Banales. “He will bring valuable experience to the table and assist in our effort to maintain strong leadership for this organization.”

In addition to his law practice, Fox is a former Santa Barbara City College instructor, a member of UCSB’s Chancellor’s Council, a trustee at Laguna Blanca School, and board chair of the Rehabilitation Institute at Santa Barbara.
