Flick’ screens at Wilding
Local filmmaker Earl Richmond will share his thoughts as
he shows his films about the local marine environment, April 4 at 7 p.m. at the
Santa Ynez Valley Grange Hall in Santa Ynez, under the auspices of the Wilding
Art Museum. The “Friday Flicks” have
been moved to the Grange this month because of the expected large turnout.

Anderson
comes to UCSB
Poet, playwright and
musician Laurie Anderson, presented by Arts & Lectures, will bring her new
work, “Homeland,” to UCSB’s Campbell Hall on April 9. The acclaimed performance
artist has combined the languages of technology, songwriting and poetry to
explore the country’s “persistent language of war,” in a piece that the New

`Conspiracy’
is historic
Director Frank Pierson’s film “Conspiracy” will be
screened on April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in UCSB’s Campbell Hall, with no admission
charge. The film is a docudrama about the Wansee
Conference staged by the Nazis in 1942. This was the meeting at which the
decision was made to implement Adolf Hitler’s so-called Final Solution to kill
Europe’s Jewish population. Director
Pierson will be on hand to discuss his film and the historic ramifications of
Hitler’s plan.
BASSH
is back in town
It’s time again for Santa Barbara Dance Alliance’s annual
presentation of “BASSH: Ballroom, Argentine Tango, Salsa, Swing and Hip Hop,”
playing April 11 and 12 at the Lobero Theatre.
Exhibition dancers and competition winners will demonstrate their artistry in
these performances, which begin at 8 p.m. both evenings. Derrick Curtis will
emcee and swing dance with his wife Trudie. More

Jazz
X three will perform
Modern vocal innovator Bobby McFerrin will be joined by
jazz keyboardist Chick Correa and drummer Jack DeJohnette
at the Granada Theatre on April 15 at 8 p.m. Presented by UCSB Arts &
Lectures, the three will perform music centered on McFerrin’s wide vocal range
and interpretive skills. Keyboardist
Correa will conduct a master class in conjunction with the concert. Drummer DeJohnette has appeared with a number of jazz masters,
including Miles Davis when he created “Bitches Brew” and “In a Silent Way.”

Midori,
McDonald to play
Violin prodigy Midori, along with pianist Robert McDonald,
will present a program including the sonata from John Corigliano’s
score for the film “The Red Violin,” on April 11 at 8 p.m. at UCSB’s Campbell
Hall. Midori has been an audience
favorite since her debut at age 11, and McDonald is an award-winning pianist.
The two also will play Antonin Dvorak’s “Romantic Pieces, Op. 75” Cesar
Franck’s Sonata in A major, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata in A major Op.
30, no. 1. Midori plays the 1734 Guarnerius del Gesu “ex-Huberman,” which is on
lifetime loan from the Hayashibara Foundation. Those

`Aurelia’s
Oratorio’ on tap
“Aurelia’s Oratorio,” a “nouveau cirque” starring the
granddaughter of Charles Chaplin, will be presented April 14 and 15 at 8 p.m.
in the Marjorie Luke Theatre. Billed as a family-friendly production, this work
by Aurelia Thierree combines physical theater,
comedy, magic and dance in a show set to a quirky soundtrack of accordions,
chamber music and Gypsy jazz. The work
was created by Amelia’s mother, Victoria Chaplin Thierree,
and borrows from music hall, variety show and circus spectacle. Ticket

Vintners
plan fest
The wares of local wine makers will be presented at a
Vintners’ Festival April 19, 1 to 4 p.m. at River Park, Hwy. 246 and Sweeney
Road, Lompoc.
Tastings will be from more than 90 wineries, with proceeds going to
local charities, and live music will play throughout the event. Information and

‘Godspell’ on PCPA Playing List
“Godspell” will be presented by
Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts (PCPA) at the Marian Theater on the
Hancock College campus from April 10 to May 11, and at the Solvang Festival
Theater from June 6 to July 17.
The original production by John-Michael Tebelak has been updated with music and new lyrics by
Stephen Schwartz.
