Gallery
Los Olivos is now presenting a show of oil works by
Sheryl Knight and jewelry by Linda Lewis. “New Horizons” will be on display
through April 30 at the Gallery, located at 2930 Grand Avenue in Los Olivos. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Sheryl
Knight is a plein air representational artist, and
lives on the Central Coast. She paints landscapes, including vineyards,
pastures, and seascapes, while including some of the architecture. Lewis
creates one-of-kind jewelry in sterling silver and gold, adding unusual
semi-precious stones.
‘Cats’ slinks into
town
The
popular Andrew Lloyd Weber musical, “Cats,” is coming to the Arlington Theatre
for three nights, April 15, 16 and 17. The touring company of the long-running
Broadway hit show – based on T.S. Eliot’s “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats”
– will play each evening at 7:30, and a live orchestra is featured.

Arlo Guthrie brings it
home
Folk
artist Arlo Guthrie will bring his blend of music and
philosophy to UCSB’s Campbell Hall on April 16 at 8 p.m.
Billed
as his “Solo Reunion Tour,” the evening will feature Guthrie recalling his
years of social activism since writing and starring in 1967’s classic anti-war
film, “Alice’s Restaurant.”
He
has promised to deliver “the songs, the humor, the
commitment to keep making the world a better place for everyone.”
County calls for
artists
The
County Arts Commission has issued a call for area artists – mid-career or just
beginning – to submit works for EDGE, an exhibit of contemporary art at
Channing Peake Gallery.
Ro
Snell, former director of Ro Snell Gallery, is acting as curator of the show.
It will run Sept. 29 through next Jan. 16, at the gallery, located in the
County Administration Building at 105 East Anapamu
St.
Artists
are asked to submit no more than five digital images of their current work, as
300 dots-per-inch jpeg files on a PC/MAC-compatible disk with titles and
medium, or five slides with titles. Each submission should be accompanied by a
hard copy of the artist’s resume.
Submissions,
due no later than May 30, will be returned if a self-addressed, stamped
envelope is enclosed. The word EDGE should be written on the entry envelope.

Theater explores
‘Working’
Valley
Community Theatre is presenting the musical “Working,” based on the oral
history interviews of author Studs Terkel, at the
Santa Ynez Valley Grange Hall.
“Working”
shows the lives of hard-working American men and women who talk and sing about
their jobs, their days, and their aspirations.
It
was adapted by Stephen Schwartz, composer of “Godspell”
and “Wicked,” along with James Taylor, Craig Carnelia,
Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead and Miki Grant. The cast includes Joe
Lambert, Barbara Brown, Linda Scott, Craig Scott, Amy Calvert, Kris Walters,
Claudia Jayne, Michelle Bradley, Laura Birrell, Gary Foshee, Emily Abello, Linda Gail,
Jose Ramirez, John Reese, and Rob Marland. The
director is Linda Burrows and the music director is Rose Knoles.
“Working”
will show on April 18 and 19 and April 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are

Mid-East talk at UCSB
Authors
Steve Coll (The Bin Ladens
— An Arabian Family in the American Century”) and Robin Wright (“Dreams and
Shadows — The Future of the Middle East”) will lecture at UCSB on April 17.
Each
will give a 45-minute presentation, followed by an onstage conversation,
starting at 7 p.m.
Coll, winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, has
written about the Bin Laden family’s interaction with American ideas, and how
Osama Bin Laden rebelled against that family.
Wright
is now the diplomatic correspondent of the Washington Post, after years covering
the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America and Asia.
