Santa Ynez High’s Junior-Senior prom was held April 26 at the University Club of Santa Barbara. The theme of the formal dance was “Masquerade,” and students, dressed to the nines, experienced a jovial night of dancing, refreshments, and socializing.

For many, prom is an opportunity to get dressed up and treat themselves to a night of extravagance and fun that they will look back upon fondly as a prominent high school memory. Many students went out for dinner to Firestone, Pascucci’s, and other nice restaurants, either in their own cars or in rented limousines and party buses.

The limo or party bus experience is truly an unforgettable one — friends and dates all packed into a huge vehicle, complete with all the bells and whistles of an exquisite interior.

The University Club itself was a beautiful location. Rose petals were strewn across the brick walkway and the steps to the doors, and the excitement of the students was tangible as they checked in with members of the faculty by the door. The rooms, reminiscent of Spanish Mediterranean style, were lit by chandeliers and a roaring fire, giving the gorgeous antique chairs, tables, couches, and buffet cabinets a cozy atmosphere.

A smaller connecting room held tables of delicious refreshments and a bar serving nonalcoholic drinks. The dance floor, packed with teens, seemed to shake with the booming bass notes, and chairs set around the perimeter provided a place to sit and enjoy the evening when one got too tired from dancing (often in high heels). A quaint patio, graced by a sea breeze, offered a refreshing break from the heat of the dance floor.

The students were mostly upperclassmen, with the occasional younger date or older guest. Several Santa Ynez 2007 alumni attended, including Tyler Boslaugh and Vanessa Van Dyck. The Prom King and Queen for 2008 were Anthony Clark and Lindsay Wolf.

The seniors all looked exquisite in their suave tuxedos and elegant gowns and dresses. Several popular trends of the night were low-backed or short dresses for girls and crimson vests for guys. Scanning the dance floor, one could observe myriad colors: olive green silk, cobalt velvet, brilliant cerulean, shining gold and silver, aquamarine, pearl, pink, scarlet, and elegant black. The sea of color and excitement made for a night of magical and extravagant merriment.
