SYVUHS boys’ water polo beats league rivals

The Santa Ynez Valley Union High School boys’ water polo team won a big league game Oct. 15 against Cabrillo, its Los Padres League rivals, winning 10-3 at the Lompoc Aquatic Center.

Sophomore goalie Adam Taylor had his best game of the season so far, according to coach Jake Kalkowski, blocking 13 of 16 attempted shots. Taylor also had three steals.

On offense, Bryce Small had four goals from the 2-meter position, scoring on every shot he attempted in the game. Travis Frohlich and Dustin Alker each scored two goals for Santa Ynez, and Simon Haws and Elijah Ozimec each scored once.

The Pirates had a 5-2 lead at halftime and extended the margin after the half.

“Other key notes include our defense, which shut down all of their man-up/power play positions,” Kalkowski said. “We are now 14-5 overall and 3-0 in league.”
