Last week’s homecoming festivities resulted in an eclectic mix of costumes on campus. The week began with a ’60s-themed Monday; students wore afro wigs and bell bottoms.

Homecoming parade hits valley

Tuesday was Superhero Day, so there was more than one person walking around in a cape.

On Wednesday, students wore motocross gear and all the popular Southern California clothing brands for Bro Day. The day of the homecoming assembly was dubbed Space Day in order to tie into this year’s outer space theme. Students were costumed as aliens and astronauts. Finally, following standard SYUHS tradition, Friday encouraged students to wear orange and black to show Pirate pride.

On Thursday, the assembly began with an impressive routine by the cheerleaders and a sampling of music from the band. The princesses received a sash and were escorted into the assembly by their favorite teachers.

For entertainment, the princesses had to use pillows to stop their homecoming dates from scoring baskets. Lastly, in an attempt to trump the Men in Tights performance from last year’s senior boys, this year’s seniors performed in alien-like white masks and later revealed blue-painted chests and faces while Eiffel ’65s “Blue” played on the speakers.

On Friday, after riding on floats in the afternoon parade, the princesses sat under outdoor heaters and cheered the football team during the game against Morrow Bay. They were joined by last year’s queen, Whitney Moir, and crossed the field at halftime, escorted by their fathers. Whitney presented varsity soccer player Aolani Rueff with the crown, and the team returned to the field. The pirates went on to win the game 27-16.
