The Santa Ynez Valley Union High School boys and girls cross-country teams survived 107-degree temperatures Sept. 23 at the Midland competition. Pirates’ senior runner Monica Illes, left, came in first for her first overall championship.

Results from boys’ action: Santa Ynez 22, Midland 33, Dunn 81. Winchester Eubank came in second, while other finishers for Santa Ynez included Connor Reck, Ty Krystkowiak, Javier Garcia, Carlos Soto, Keanu Cohen, and Cody Uhrig. In the girls’ meet, it was Santa Ynez 21, Dunn 49, Midland 51.

The order of the additional Santa Ynez runners: Amelia Archer, Haley Illes, Shay Calderon, Alex Baker-Brown, Kelsey Spry and Ashleigh Giacomotti.

At the Righetti Invitational Saturday, eight schools participated at the 3.2-mile course that featured five hills. The girls’ came in fourth overall and the boys were fifth.
