The chrome was polished, white-wall tires were gleaming and the paint jobs were spotless.

Hundreds of cars and thousands of people spilled down Copenhagen Drive and flooded onto first street Saturday for the sixth annual Wheels and Windmills car show.

The view down Copenhagen was an almost solid sea of people moving between each of the cars for a closer look at the saturated colors and glistening metal.

Event organizer Joanne Stokes said more than 300 cars lined the streets and were judged in more than 40 categories including Mayor’s choice and modern muscle.

“We were very happy with this year. It seems to go smoother every year,” she said.

Stokes and her husband, Bob, have been behind the show for six years in Solvang; before that, it was held in Buellton.

Each year the show gives back to the community by sponsoring charities. In 2009, $11,500 was donated to the Happy Ending Animal Rescue Sanctuary.

This year the Stokes chose to focus on the animal rescue group again, making them their primary charity.

Stokes said she typically likes to sponsor a new charity each year, but decided the sanctuary had a big enough need to work with them again this year.

Proceeds from the 2010 show will also go to the Progeria Research Foundation and Santa Ynez Valley Union High School shop class, among other charities.
