Hundreds of people turned out to downtown Solvang on Saturday to enjoy an event of four-legged excitement. The 2nd annual DogtoberFest celebration featured a doggie costume parade, a talent contest and a wiener dog race. Dog owners participated in a contest at Solvang Park to win prizes for various categories, such as “Most Spirited Canine,” Best doggie singer,” “Largest adult dog,” “Best human howl” and “Best kisser.”

The pet parade, which began south on First Street, stepped off shortly after 10 a.m., featuring dozens of canines – large and small breeds – dressed in colorful and amusing costumes. The midday merriment also offered informational vendor booths, pet services, adoptable dogs, food and beverages, a bake sale and face painting.

Sponsored by the Santa Barbara County Animal Care Foundation, the celebration benefited the homeless canines in the county’s three animal shelters.
